After completing my first 24 hours in New York City I feel confident enough to tell myself… “Hell yeah YOU did it!!!!”
The lead up to my flight was quite stressful because, me being me, I left everything until the last minute. I’m talking important things like travel insurance and converting my £ to $. So after accepting my unorganised self, I got on with it as best I could and you know what? I made it to New York in one piece, with my luggage intact.
After many sleepless nights and text messages from worried friends, I was starting to re-think the idea of doing this on my own. So many things can go wrong! I miss my flight, I get lonely, I run out of money, I get lost in a city I don’t know… All of these things could of happened or might still happen. However, I’ve made it this far and I wont let fear overtake the huge feeling of accomplishment.
Travelling alone on an aeroplane full of strangers, successfully finding transport to the place you’re staying, facing the metro system (which is completely confusing to a Londoner like me) and kind of getting lost but figuring it out in the end… The truth is that actually yes, you can do it. You have to forget about all the reasons why it won’t work. You have to ignore the fear in your friend’s tone when they say ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’…
1000% yes you’re sure. Solo travel is the best gift you could ever give yourself.
